ISA-TR18.2.5-2022, Alarm System Monitoring, Assessment, and Auditing, has been published. The document is one of a series technical reports written by ISA18 in support of the widely used ISA standard, ANSI/ISA-18.2-2016, Management of Alarm Systems for the Process Industries. The technical report provides guidance, rationale, and examples of alarm monitoring, assessment, and audit.
ISA88 has begun work in concert with IEC SC 65A on an update of ANSI/ISA-88.00.01, Batch Control Part 1: Models and Terminology. The first in the widely used ISA88 series, the standard defines reference models for batch and related procedure-oriented manufacturing as used in the process industries, and terminology that helps explain the relationships between those models and terms.
The committe will hold semi-annual meetings during the week of 17 October at SIS-Tech in Houston, Texas, US. ISA84 currently is focused on writing and updating a series of technical reports to aid in the understanding and application of the series, ANSI/ISA-61511, Functional Safety – Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector.
One of the most extensively used of all ISA standards, ISA-5.1, Instrumentation Symbols and Identification, was updated in a 2022 version to provide usage clarifications and correct minor errors uncovered over the years since the previous 2009 version. A new ISA5 working group has now begun work on a major revision of the 2022 version, with a targeted publication of October 2024.
The committee has established a new Working Group 14, “Security Profiles for Electric Energy OT Control Systems.” WG14 will focus on a cybersecurity work product utilizing the ISA/IEC 62443 series of standards for securing various control systems used in electric energy generation, transmission, and distribution operations. The committee has begun work on an update of ISA–RP67.04.02–2010, Methodologies for the Determination of Setpoints for Nuclear Safety-Related Instrumentation. The recommended practice presents guidelines and examples of methods for the implementation of ANSI/ISA-67.04.01-2018, Setpoints for Nuclear Safety-Related Instrumentation.
Standards Meetings at the ISA Automation & Leadership Conference
The following ISA standards committees will hold full-day meetings following the conference in Galveston, Texas, US:
- ISA18, Instrument Signals and Alarms
- ISA75, Control Valve Standards
- ISA95, Enterprise-Control System Integration
The conference, held 7–9 November, will include a full selection of technical presentations on key industry topics including digital transformation, cybersecurity, IIoT, smart manufacturing, and process automation.
Several changes in the leader structure of ISA18 have been announced. Long-time co-chair Nicholas Sands of DuPont has been appointed to join Graham Nasby of CN Rail as co-managing director, in which role, among other responsibilities, they oversee committee actions to ensure compliance with ISA’s ANSI-accredited standards procedures. Replacing Sands as ISA18 co-chair is Kevin Brown of mCloud, who will join long-time co-chair Donald Dunn of WS Nelson. Watch for more information on the work and plans of ISA18 in the November-December issue of InTech magazine.
ISA99 is reviewing the first draft of the ISA/IEC 62443 Ontologies, which are intended to propose consistent terms and definitions for the 62443 series, and to facilitate deeper understanding of these terms by showing the relationships between them. The ontologies are the first deliverable from the ISA99 WG5 TG3 Series Consistency task group, which is chartered to improve the consistency of future editions of ISA/IEC 62443 standards. ISA84 has issued an updated version of ISA-TR84.00.03, Automation Asset Integrity (AAI) of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), for committee ballot due 31 October. The technical report addresses considerations for planning and implementing an AAI program for SIS, and is one of a number of ISA84 technical reports to aid in the understanding and application of the series, ANSI/ISA-61511, Functional Safety – Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector.
