Jim Federlein

Jim Federlein Jim Federlein has been both an instructor in instrumentation and controls and the Education Chairman for the ISA Pittsburgh Section for over 20 years. Jim is an instructor and course editor for ISA, volunteers on ISA standards committees (ISA5.1), and serves as ISA's interface to the PROLIST project. Jim also develops custom training courses for manufacturing and engineering companies. Recognized both for his in-depth knowledge of measurement and control and his ability to clearly explain concepts to and share his experience with students, Jim has passed knowledge on to hundreds of students over the years. A licensed professional engineer, Jim is also a member of National Society of Professional Engineers.

Jim has over thirty five years of industrial automation and control systems engineering experience ranging from basic instrumentation to complete plant automation in a variety of industries, including chemical, food, pharmaceutical, micro-electronics (Clean Room), metals, pulp & paper, consumer products, and nuclear. Jim has worked for large manufacturing and engineering companies and started offices for two control systems integrators. His engineering management experience includes project management, planning and scheduling, staffing, and execution. For the last 17 years, Jim has been in private practice consulting in automation and controls in various industries. Typical projects include automation conceptualization, hazards analysis, project estimating, detailed design, construction monitoring, loop check, commissioning, and startup. Control systems consist of DCS, PLC, and SIS for both batch and continuous plants.
