• Using RFID/RTLS to Track Industrial Assets (SP27C)

    Length: 1 day
    CEU Credits: 0.7
    Course Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Asset tracking for industrial settings has exploded onto the scene through the needs of the security office, safety office, maintenance, process, and other plant departments. While this arena tends to be associated with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), it is much better represented by Real Time Location Services(Systems), RTLS.

Using the Industrial Asset tracking activities underway in ISA100, a fair comparison of various RFID and RTLS technologies is made through baseline case studies. Understanding that wireless RTLS systems will probably be co-resident with other wireless systems in an integrated industrial site, we will examine the technical and practical issues associated with coexistence of multiple wireless systems. Examples of return of investment studies for deployed RTLS will be reviewed.

The goals of this course are to introduce the conceptual, logistical, and application-specific concepts, along with the fundamental engineering underpinnings of RFID. Then, it will expand to a broad range of technologies that allow for tracking of radio-equipped devices. With this information in hand, you will then be able to make a more constructive decision as to how this technology may be integrated into your industrial or comparable setting. This course concentrates on the industrial setting which poses a tighter set of operational and logistical constraints.

    You will be able to:

    • Identify the technical aspects of RFID
    • Describe the fundamental differences in "types of RFID"
    • Explain to your colleagues what RTLS is (and isn't) and how different vendors use fundamentally different wireless technologies to address RTLS
    • Describe the fundamental and implementation differences between RFID and RTLS systems
    • Identify the strengths and weaknesses of RFID
    • Location awareness of "where the devices/tags/people are"
    • Recognize the security and privacy aspects of RFID/RTLS
    • Relate RTLS technology to solve real business situations

    You will cover:

    • A Quick Review of Communication Fundamentals: Frequencies | Narrowband Systems | Spread Spectrum Techniques | Protocols | Multiplexing
    • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID): Overview | Passive RFID | Active RFID | Battery-Powered Semiactive RFID
    • Tags: Backscatter Interrogation | Tag Complexity Versus Functionality | Packaging
    • Real-Time Location Services: Appropriate Wireless Technology | Networking Topologies | Implementation Issues
    • Industrial Asset Tracking: Appropriate Wireless Technology | Networking Topologies | Implementation Issues
    • ISA100.21 Technology: End User Needs| Integration with Other Industrial Wireless Systems and Applications
    • Strategies and Methodologies
    • Comparison of RTLS Systems: Appropriate Wireless Technology | Networking Topologies | Deployment Demands | Case Studies
