• ANSI/ISA-67.04-2006:  Setpoints For Nuclear Safety-Related Instrumentation (IC68P)

    The latest version of the ANSI/ISA67 standard is focused on performance monitoring. These concepts are consistent with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's current position on the requirements for setting supporting Limiting Safety System Settings (as defined in 10CFR50.36) and calculating necessary tolerances. The ANSI/ISA-67.04-2006  standard is intended for use in establishing procedures for determining setpoints, setpoint margins, and test routines in safety-related instrument channels. The 2006 version of the standard is consistent with the current NRC guidance and will provide the information necessary to comply with this guidance. 

    The course will discuss the terminology and the appropriate use of the standard and the steps necessary for the development of safety-related setpoint analysis. ANSI/ISA-67.04.01  has been used as the basis for many plant specific setpoint programs and setpoint calculations. The changes to this standard should be reflected in all programs where compliance to NRC requirements is necessary.

    You will be able to:

      • Errors associated with measuring the process
      • Errors associated with the primary element
      • Errors associated with the instruments
    • Methods of error combination and when each is proper
    • Recognize the importance of instrument setpoint and uncertainty parameters in the plant safety analysis
    • Explain why a methodology is necessary
    • Explain why calculations must follow the methodology
    • State why ISA-RP67.04.02  was developed
    • State the limitations of the recommended practice 
    • Identify the requirements for implementing a utility or plant specific methodology

    • History of Setpoint Requirements:  Regulatory Guidance/Industry Compliance/Setpoints and the Safety Analysis (LSSS) Relationship
    • Terminology
    • Error Relationships
    • The Calculation Process:
      • Determine the starting point
      • Evaluate sources of uncertainty
      • Determine process-based uncertainty
      • Determine component-based uncertainty
      • Determine installation-based uncertainty
      • Determine error combination method(s)
      • Determine the channel errors, setpoint, and tolerances
      • Evaluate the impact on plant operation
      • Setpoints and plant practices

    Classroom/Laboratory Exercises:

    • Develop ladder diagram of error relationships
    • Calculate line loss and pressure drop in pipe
    • Evaluate the error associated with density changes in a level measurement channel
    • Evaluate the impact of environmental changes on a pressure measurement channel
    • Evaluate temperature measurement errors for an application
    • Evaluate errors for a flow measurement channel
    • Discuss error propagation through non-linear components
    • Review supplied vendor records and evaluate error impact based on text
    • Develop setpoint calculation from given conditions and components

    Recommended Prerequisites:

    •  While not required, general experience with instrumentation applications is beneficial
