    Q: What is the fee to apply for CAP Associate?

    The application fee is $85 for ISA Members and $95 for nonmembers.

    Q: What forms of payment does ISA accept for the application fee and/or private testing fees?

    ISA will accept a check, certified check, money order, or credit card. Make checks payable to ISA. Purchase orders are not accepted. Payment must be received with the application before it will be processed.

    Q: Is the application fee refundable?

    CAP Associate fees are NOT refundable. It is the responsibility of the applicant to thoroughly review the requirements for an examination and apply for the examination at the level at which he/she is qualified. No refunds will be made for applicants who do not show up for testing on the appropriate test date.

    Q: What documentation is necessary to meet the testing requirements?

    General criteria to qualify to take the CAP Associate examination includes a commitment to the ISA Code of Ethics along with requested documentation supporting the education and/or experience requirements, and the application fee. Applicants must meet one of the three qualifications outlined below to be eligible to sit for the CAP Associate exam.

    Acceptable education and work experience requirements:

      I. If you hold a 4 year technical degree:
      Four-year academic degree from an accredited educational institution in a technical or technology field including chemistry, computer programming, physics, math, instrumentation, measurement and control, electrical, electronics or mechanical.

      II. If you hold a 2 year technical degree:
      Two-year academic degree from an accredited educational institution in a technical or technology field including computer programming, instrumentation, measurement and control, electrical, electronics or mechanical, plus related work experience of one (1) year in the automation field. One (1) year of work experience means 1,500 hours of active employment.

      III. Work Experience:
      Five years of work related work experience in the automation field. One (1) year of work experience means 1,500 hours of active employment.

    ISA reserves the right to audit information provided in your certification application. A random selection of applicants will be chosen for audit. If your application is audited, you will be required to verify your employment history, education, and position as it relates to your application eligibility. Applicants who are audited must complete an audit form and return to ISA within sixty (60) days of audit notification. Failure to do so will result in revocation of your application.

    Q: What will I receive after I submit my CAP Associate application?

    Applicants will receive a Documentation Request form asking for support of education and work experience.  If your application is approved, you will receive a Confirmation Letter with eligibility code to register to take the exam at a Prometric testing center.

    If your documentation is deficient, you will receive a letter stating what documentation is still needed to meet the requirements and a date by which it must be received in order to take the exam.

    Q: Once I take the examination, how long will it be before I am notified of my status?

    Your results will be provided to you on-site at the Prometric testing center immediately after completing the exam.

    Q: What is the passing score for the CAP Associate exams?

    The passing score is not released.

    Q: When do I need to arrive at the test site?

    You should arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled exam start time you scheduled with Prometric. All examinations are given in a two-hour period.

    Q: What should I bring with me to the exam site?

    The following is a listing of items you need to bring to the exam site:

    • Your Confirmation Notice from ISA
    • A photo identification such as a driver’s license or employer-issued badge

    Q: Are there any materials I cannot bring to the exam?

    The following is a list of items not permitted in the exam room:

    • Reference material of any kind (The CAP Associate exam is closed book.)
    • Electronic or communication devices of any kind, including cellular phone, palmtop, or laptop
    • Food or drink

    Q: Where can I take the CAP Associate exam?

    The CAP Associate exam is available at Prometric testing centers worldwide.

    Q: How do I get a copy of my certificate in case I lose it or if my supervisor wants one?

    To receive a duplicate copy of your certificate, send a written request to ISA with your mailing address and payment of $15.00 for a duplicate certificate. Once your payment is received, a certificate will be mailed to you.

    Q: How is the CAP Associate Recognition program different from the Certified Automation Professional®(CAP®) program?

    CAP Associate Recognition is not a certification. Those who take the CAP Associate examination may be interested in pursuing the ISA credential, Certified Automation Professional once they meet the required education and/or experience requirements. Achieving CAP Associate Recognition equals a maximum of one year towards the CAP certification work experience requirements. For more information on the CAP program, click here.
