MARCH 2013

2013 ISA President, Terrence G. Ives:
ISA training can help companies throughout the world grow and compete

As manufacturing and economies worldwide rebound from the deep recession, workforce training can play a vital role in getting industrial companies back on track, and improving their capacity to meet growing demands for products. ISA is well positioned to provide the world-class training the market needs.

The Automation Federation works with White House as part of President Obama's cybersecurity executive order
Working with the Obama administration, the Automation Federation is helping to forge national security standards, guidelines, and compliance testing for safeguarding America's critical infrastructure from cyberattacks. At the request of the administration and in the wake of the president's recent executive order on cybersecurity, representatives of the Automation Federation are participating in key meetings.

ISA participates in international meeting to discuss globalization strategies and explore new collaborative ventures
Underscoring ISA's commitment to global partnership-building, ISA's Executive Director and CEO, Patrick Gouhin, participated recently at a meeting in Hong Kong exploring collaborative initiatives among industry associations throughout all areas of the world, including the rapidly growing Asia-Pacific region.

New ISA book reveals proven ways to protect national infrastructure, and defense and production capabilities from cyberattack
ISA has published a new book that outlines clear and proven security principles, practices, and standards that, when properly applied, can safeguard nations' critical infrastructure, defense establishment, and production capabilities from the risks of cyberattack: Industrial Automation and Control System Security Principles by Ronald L. Krutz, Ph.D., P.E.

Subject-matter and regulatory experts confirmed to present at the 13th Fugitive Emissions-LDAR Symposium
"The ISA LDAR Symposium is the event for obtaining critical regulatory updates and forecasts direct from government regulators, and securing the tools and know-how needed to be more proactive in compliance and leak prevention efforts," says Greg Walton, ISA LDAR Technical Program Chair.

The ISA Houston Section Supports the 54th Science and Engineering Fair of Houston
The ISA Houston Section participated in and supported the 54th Science and Engineering Fair of Houston by providing judges for the event, which was held 1 March 2013 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The Science and Engineering Fair of Houston is a junior and senior high school fair that promotes "learning and applications of science and technology" in Houston and the surrounding 23-county area.

Automation Federation recognized by Frost & Sullivan with a 2013 Manufacturing Leadership 100 Award
Frost & Sullivan's Manufacturing Leadership Council recognized the Automation Federation as one of 100 world-class manufacturing companies in its 2013 Manufacturing Leadership 100 Awards (ML100 Awards) program for the significant partnership formed in 2012 between the Automation Federation and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

The ISA100 Wireless Compliance Institute (WCI) will host a technology display at the upcoming Hannover Messe 2013 show in Germany, 8-12 April 2013. Participating companies in WCI, such as Yokogawa, Honeywell, GE, FlowServe, Nivis, P+F, John Crane, Phoenix Contact, Control Data Systems, and many others, will have devices on hand to showcase benefits of ANSI/ISA-100.11a device interoperability and control over wireless.

Special Announcements:

Submit nominations for this year's Celebrating Excellence Awards before the 31 March 2013 deadline
The Celebrating Excellence awards program is an extension of ISA's time-honored practice of recognizing those companies and individuals, both members and non-members, who have contributed to the Society and automation industry. Please be aware that the nomination period ends 31 March 2013.

Please don't let the deadline come and go without submitting your nominations. There are many companies and professionals worthy of recognition, and they deserve your support and endorsement.

An important message from the 2013 ISA Admissions Committee Chair, James McKinley, on submitting ISA Fellow nominations
There's nothing quite as satisfying as having your achievements acknowledged by your peers. ISA Fellow membership does just that. The prestigious grade of ISA Fellow recognizes exceptional engineering or scientific contributions to the automation profession based on peer evaluation. To be eligible for nomination, a candidate must have been an ISA Member for at least five years and must currently be a Senior Member.

Of course, worthy recognition can't occur without a nomination. The nomination deadline is 30 April. Don't delay. Review the description of requirements for nomination and complete and submit a nomination today. If you have a question, please contact Debbie Eby at deby@isa.org or call 919-990-9241.

ISA's Executive Board adopts Governance Structure Task Force Report
On 26 January 2013, the Governance Structure Task Force presented their final report to the ISA Executive Board, and the Executive Board voted to adopt the report. The task force, having completed its mission, was disbanded, and a sub-set of the group was appointed to a Governance Structure Design Team. The design team is working to develop and implement the specific changes to the ISA Bylaws and the Manuals of Organization and Procedures, as well as a transition plan that would be required to implement the recommendations outlined in the final report.
