ISA113–Distributed Workflow System Integration Committee
Scope of Work
The ISA113 Committee is tasked with developing a specification that defines abstract information exchange models, based on an ontology, for integrating procedural workflows across multiple vendor systems. These models will extend and align with the workflow specifications outlined in:
- ANSI/ISA-95.00.04-2018, Enterprise-Control System Integration – Part 4: Objects and Attributes for Manufacturing Operations Management Integration
- ANSI/ISA-88.00.01-2010, Batch Control – Part 1: Models and Terminology
The specification will support distributed workflows coordinated across various development and execution environments. These workflows may be carried out by physical devices, virtual devices or humans.
Key capabilities of the models include:
- Support for recipe/equipment separation as defined in ISA-88
- Support for choreographed workflows as described in ISA-95
- Compatibility with mobile, personal and temporarily disconnected devices
Importantly, the specification will not define specific implementations for workflow execution or management. Instead, it will focus on defining interface models that enable seamless, distributed workflow integration across diverse platforms and systems.
The goals are to:
- Improve consistency and uniformity in interface terminology
- Reduce the cost, risk and errors involved in implementing distributed workflow interfaces
The ontology model employed will use domain-neutral terminology and support orchestrated workflows applicable to industrial, administrative, operational, automated, semi-automated and manual processes.
This committee will develop ISA standards and guidance materials within its defined scope. It will also evaluate and, where appropriate, adopt and support relevant standards from other organizations.
