Get involved!—Activity #4:
Be a mentor—Speak at a school or to others about automation-related careers
Mentorship and the personalized, expert guidance and support that accompany it are vital to fostering young people’s interest in STEM learning and career disciplines.
A good mentor can ignite a passion for science, technology, engineering and math where before hardly a flicker existed. Some young people may not be aware of their own potential and lack the knowledge and confidence to explore it.
Giving a presentation at a local school or in the classroom is another great way to connect with young people about the value and qualities of a rewarding STEM-centric career in automation. Teachers and guidance counselors are actively seeking working professionals—particularly those in STEM fields—to deliver career presentations to students or to supplement their learning curriculum.
Here are some resources to get you started:
- Messaging hints when communicating to students
- Suggestions on how to engage students
- Options for in-class, hands-on STEM demonstrations
- Volunteer as a Project Lead The Way classroom speaker or mentor
- Contact a Project Lead The Way school in your area to explore speaking opportunities
