2015 ISA Power Industry Symposium features five acclaimed keynote speakers, an extensive technical program, training opportunities and more

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA (18 March 2015) — The best and brightest minds—including five eminent keynote speakers—will address the critical issues and challenges in automation facing the power generation industry at the 58th Annual ISA Power Industry Division (POWID) Symposium, 7-12 June 2015 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Attendees will gain the latest news and trends in automation and control systems, instrumentation, cybersecurity and emerging technologies across all energy sources: fossil fuel, nuclear and renewable energy. More than 50 technical presentations will be delivered and more than 70 technical sessions are expected to be conducted.
A strong emphasis will be placed on recent advances and innovations in applying security to control systems; improving power plant load demand response and low-load operation; and monitoring and diagnosing plant equipment and system reliability issues through the use of sensors and online monitoring technology.
The exhibit showcase will feature the latest product and service information at engaging vendor and supplier exhibits, and daily networking luncheons and nightly receptions will set the stage for mingling, meeting new people and reconnecting with old friends.
In addition, the symposium will serve as the site for:
- ISA and industry training sessions
- The Power Industries Division Awards Luncheon
- Meetings of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) interest group and ISA power plant standards working groups on nuclear power plant controls (ISA-67) and fossil power plant controls (ISA-77).
Five outstanding keynote presentations and speakers
Helping to kick off the conference will be 2015 ISA President Rick Roop, who will deliver a welcome address to attendees. While Roop is currently an executive, senior portfolio manager and owner at an investment advisory firm, he spent a significant portion of his career in the power industry.
After earning a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering technology in 1980, Roop accepted a position as a senior instrumentation engineer at Southern Indiana Gas & Electric Company (now Vectren). He then joined Hoosier Energy, REC, first serving as an instrument and electrical engineer at the company from 1986 to 1995, and later serving as General Manager at the company’s Frank E. Ratts Generating Station from 1995 to 2001.
Below are the presentation titles and summary biographies of the four other keynote speakers.
“US Department of Energy Cyber Policies in Power Generation”
Speaker: Mike Smith
Mike Smith is the Senior Cyber Policy Advisor to the Assistant Secretary in the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability within the US Department of Energy, a position he has held since September 2012.
His duties include leading and/or facilitating a wide range of energy sector cybersecurity initiatives across the department, the interagency, and the national security staff. He leads the department’s participation as the Energy Sector-Specific Agency in the Integrated Task Force charged with implementing Executive Order 13636 and Presidential Policy Directive 21. He is also the Cybersecurity Risk Information Sharing Pilot (CRISP) program manager.
In a previous position as director, Smith established the department’s Combatant Command (COCOM) Energy Advisor program, which hires and deploys a DOE energy advisor to each COCOM headquarters.
Prior to coming to DOE, he served as a consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton. In this role, he supported a variety of Department of Defense clients, including the Defense Critical Infrastructure Program Office.
“Integrating Clean Renewables into the Grid: Optimizing the Collective Capabilities of Renewable and Conventional Generation”
Speaker:G. Scott Stallard
G. Scott Stallard is Vice President of Asset Management Services at Black & Veatch, a leading global engineering, consulting and construction company specializing in infrastructure development in energy, water, telecommunications, management consulting, federal, and environmental markets.
In this role, he is responsible for management of the business and solutions associated with a wide range of operational issues including fuels, plant performance, O&M, and plant/portfolio optimization. The principle focus for Stallard and his group lies in the area of processes, tools and solutions that are geared toward helping the power generator better address the challenges due to the dynamics and complexity of the power market.
Possessing more than 25 years of experience in the fields of power generation and consulting, he has been actively involved as a consultant in helping power generators link performance, maintenance, and fuel issues to market conditions.
With extensive project management and consulting experience, Stallard’s areas of expertise include competitive generation, fuels flexibility and sourcing strategy, plant performance, information technology solutions, and asset management.
“The Impact of the Industrial Internet on Power Generation”
Speaker: Pengju Kang, Ph.D.
Pengju Kang, Ph.D., is the Technology Leader of Electrical Technologies & Systems (ETS) at the GE China Technology Center, GE’s latest global research facility focused on developing new and innovative technologies. In this position,
Dr. Kang is in charge of new technology research, new product development, and technical services.
His team is driving GE’s growth in China and globally through innovation in close cooperation with GE businesses, customers, government, universities, and research institutions.
Before joining GE, Dr. Kang worked for United Technologies and Cummins, engaging in various R&D fields including: simulation, modeling and control of hybrid drivetrain systems, elevator controls, HVAC controls and diagnostics, security systems, controls of distributed energy systems, helicopter flight controls, and integrated vehicle health monitoring.
Dr. Kang received a doctorate degree in electrical engineering from Queensland University of Technology (Australia); a master of computer and system engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (US), and a master of electrical engineering degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (China).
He has written more than 30 technical publications and is responsible for more than 25 patents.
“Fossil Energy Research and Development for Clean Power Production”
Speaker: Robert R. Romanosky, Ph.D.
Robert Romanosky, Ph.D., is the Advanced Research Technology Manager at the National Energy Technology Laboratory within the US Department of Energy.
In this role, Romanosky directs research activities throughout five programs: Materials, Coal Utilization services, Bioprocessing, University Research, and Computational Energy Sciences. He has extensive experience in federal energy and in-house research, having joined the National Energy Technology Laboratory in 1978. Since that time, he has been involved in all aspects of laboratory and process research focusing on advanced instrumentation and process analysis.
The lab’s Materials Program pursues exploratory research aimed at generating new materials, ideas, and concepts with the potential to improve the performance and reduce the cost of existing fossil systems, and to spur the development of new systems and capabilities. The Coal Utilization Program develops advanced sensors and controls, and new models for power generation. It works in concert with the lab’s Computation Energy Science Program, which seeks to facilitate the development and reduce the cost of new power generation technologies.
Romanosky received a master of science and a doctorate degree in analytical chemistry/instrumentation from West Virginia University.
