    SEPTEMBER 2013

2013 ISA President, Terrence G. Ives, explains why the technical program for this year's Automation Week conference is the most thought-provoking ever

In slightly less than two months, ISA will conduct its premier international conference for automation and control professionals: ISA Automation Week 2013: Technology and Solutions Event. I am convinced that the technical program for this year's event is the most thought-provoking, far-reaching, and meaningful ever.

    Member Spotlight:

    Q&A with Troy Riddle
This month's member spotlight presents a question-and-answer feature with Troy Riddle. Before answering a few of our questions, however, Troy introduces himself, providing some very compelling and highly motivating details about his background and development as a scholar interested in studying instrumentation technology.

ISA99 Cybersecurity standard defines key technical requirements for secure industrial control systems
In a recent press release, ISA announced that the ISA-62443 series of standards, being developed by the ISA99 committee of ISA and adopted globally by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), is designed to provide a flexible framework to address and mitigate current and future vulnerabilities in industrial automation and control systems (IACS).

Learn about "The Connected Enterprise" educational track at ISA Automation Week 2013
Given the growing need among companies to better integrate their manufacturing processes with their overall business strategies and operations-and to leverage automation solutions to accomplish this goal-ISA recently announced the formation of an enterprise-focused educational track at ISA Automation Week 2013. "The Connected Enterprise" track, co-chaired by Rob Gellings and John Clemons of MAVERICK Technologies, will examine how the latest automation applications, standards, and techniques are enabling manufacturers to unify disparate systems and processes, and improve company-wide performance, enterprise security, and marketplace competitiveness.

Get ready for the "Oscars of Automation"
ISA will host its 51st Annual Honors and Awards ceremony on 4 November 2013 at the luxurious Renaissance Nashville Hotel in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Join with influential leaders of the automation community as we celebrate the outstanding achievements of fellow automation professionals. This exclusive, black tie-optional event is guaranteed to be a night to remember. Following a reception, open only to gala ticket holders, guests will dine on a delicious three-course gourmet dinner. Live entertainment featuring local Nashville sound will follow the awards ceremony at the "after party" on the Renaissance hotel's famed "Bridge." Come and help us celebrate an outstanding group of honorees at the "Oscars of Automation"-ISA's prestigious Honors and Award Reception and Gala.

Changes to election process to be considered by Council of Society Delegates
The Council of Society Delegates will consider a Bylaws change to allow Society leaders to be elected directly by members, instead of by the Council. This change would enable members to be directly involved in the process of selecting Society leaders, including all vice presidents and Society officers. For all the details, see Motion 7 (Election of Leaders) on the ISA governance website.

With ISA Automation Week WIN-WIN Attendee Rewards, everybody wins!
WIN-WIN Attendee Rewards is an incentive program that rewards ISA Automation Week 2013 attendees and ISA sections for their support of the event. If you're registered for the conference, and you bring a friend or colleague, both of you WIN! ISA sections also WIN just by participating, with the greatest rewards for the section with the most referrals and attendees. Program ends 15 October 2013.

    Workforce Development Spotlight:

ISA Alaska Section awards $17,500 in academic scholarships - The ISA Alaska Section recently announced that it awarded $17,500 in scholarships for the 2013-14 school year to students enrolled in engineering and technical colleges. Section members reported that this year's pool of scholars was highly impressive, which made selections very difficult. Funding for the scholarships is derived through the Tom Quimby Memorial Endowment as well as through the ISA Alaska Section's own fundraising activities, which include local ISA shows and golf tournaments. Over the past five years, the ISA Alaska Section has awarded approximately $75,000 in academic scholarships, an admirable feat for a section with less than 150 ISA members.

Control valve versus variable-speed drive for flow control
Authors Mohammad Al-Khalifah and Gregory K. McMillan discuss how pumping applications with a variable-flow requirement can lower energy and life-cycle costs with the application of a variable-speed motor to deliver the desired process flow rate.
