Working with ISA staff, the Strategic Planning Department VP is expected to lead the department overseeing that the Society’s strategic plan is clearly understood at the forefront of every department’s work.

Department Purpose

  • Works closely with the President-elect Secretary who serves as the Society's Chief Strategy Officer
  • Assures that an effective, resource-efficient planning process is used to collect and integrate member and staff inputs for the strategic plan
  • Assists the Executive Board in ensuring that meaningful and relevant business plans exist to carry out the strategic plan
  • Facilitates discussion with every department and governing organization in implementing approved objectives related to the strategic plan
  • Monitors performance of the Society in line with the objectives set to achieve the strategic plan


  • Ensures that the department directors have a clear understanding of the strategic plan and business objectives
  • Participates with the Board to establish and review the Society's strategic plan
  • Provide vision and direction for the department
  • Organize and facilitate meetings, including scheduling and agenda preparation
  • Actively identify, recruit and mentor potential leaders
  • Submit at least two VP candidates biannually
  • Provide input to the Society budget, including travel expenses for VP and VP-elect
  • Submit annual reports to the Executive Board


  • Any Member, Honorary Member, Fellow, Senior Member, Life Member or Life Fellow

Preferred Experience

  • Previous Leadership on a Society-level department or committee
  • External experience in strategic planning

Time Requirements

  • Four-year commitment
  • Teleconferences and reporting - approximately 3 hours per week
  • Face to Face Meetings
    • Annual Leadership Conference - 4 days
    • Strategic Leader Meeting - 3 days
    • Executive Summit - 3 days
