Functional Safety and SIL Certification event

In early February of this year, the ISA Pune Section held a meeting to discuss functional safety and SIL certification. Today, most safety systems used in the industry as well as domestic sectors (think elevators, revolving doors, cars, etc.) are comprised of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic systems.

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) refers to these as E/E/PE systems. Safety functions that are implemented using such systems fall under the realm of functional safety. The Safety Integrity Level (SIL) of a safety function is arguably the most important parameter in the world of functional safety. Even engineers and automation professionals may not have heard of functional safety, but they have certainly heard about SIL.

Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions and myths surrounding SIL and functional safety. Mandar Phadke, Director of Risknowlogy India Pvt. Ltd., cleared up these doubts, taking the audience quickly through the concepts of functional safety and SIL at the February meeting. Phadke B.E., Instrumentation, University of Bombay & M.B.A., LaTrobe University, Melbourne, possesses more than 27 years of experience in the fields of automation and electrical systems, project engineering, software, functional safety, and general management in India and China. He leads Risknowlogy's Indian operations and heads Abhisam Software Pvt. Ltd., a company engaged in e-learning and training. Phadke participated in various national and international symposiums and in the past and served as a voting member on the ISA12.13 committee.

    Accidents are Expensive!

As the cost of accidents increase, interest in functional safety is mounting. As Phadke emphasized at the meeting, the cost of accidents is rising exponentially, with no correlation to the cost of the asset (read plant/factory). Applying functional safety throughout the lifecycle, he insisted, is likely the best course of action.
