ISA standards committee updates: power industry, final control elements, device integration

Nuclear power plant standards: ISA67

ISA67 met in June in conjunction with the ISA Power Industry Division (POWID) Symposium in Kansas City, Mo. Currently, the major standards work involves revisions of standards by the following subcommittees:

  • ISA67.01, Transducer and Transmitter Installation for Nuclear Safety
  • ISA67.04, Setpoints for Safety-related Instrumentation Used in Nuclear Power Plants
  • ISA67.06, Performance Monitoring for Nuclear Safety-related Instrument Channels in Nuclear Power Plants

An important topic during the June meeting centered on attracting new participants to the committee. Both veteran employees and more recent entries into the nuclear power plant industry gave insightful feedback. To attract additional members, the committee will provide more content online and offer webinars on instrumentation and control topics.

Fossil power plant standards: ISA77

ISA77 also met at POWID. In the past year, the committee published documents on unit/plant demand development, instrument piping installation, human-machine interface hard-panel alarms, and compensated differential pressure-based drum-level measurement. In addition, a new technical report, ANSI/ISA-TR77.30.01-2015, Power Plant Control System Dynamic Performance Test Methods and Procedures, was published in July 2015.

Current ISA77 efforts include work on fossil power plant automation and selective catalytic reduction control systems. A technical report in development, ISA-TR77.00.01, Fossil Fuel Power Plant Definitions and Basic Control Concepts, will establish uniform terminology for the ISA77 documents and explain commonly used control concepts. This document will be a guideline during the preparation of function diagrams or system configurations.

Control valve standards: ISA75

The ISA75 committee has aligned the following ISA control valve face-to-face dimensions standards with the equivalent International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards. These standards include:

  • ISA-75.08.01, Face-to-Face Dimensions for Integral Flanged Globe-Style Control Valve Bodies (Classes 125, 150, 250, 300, and 600)
  • ISA-75.08.05, Face-to-Face Dimensions for Buttweld-End Globe-Style Control Valves (Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500)
  • ISA-75.08.08, Face-to-Centerline Dimen­sions for Flanged Globe-Style Angle Control Valve Bodies (Classes 150, 300, and 600)
  • ISA-75.08.09, Face-to-Face Dimen­sions for Sliding Stem Flangeless Control Valves (Classes 150, 300, and 600)

The corresponding IEC standards include:

  • IEC 60534, Industrial-process control valves
    • Part 3-1: Dimensions – Face-to-face dimensions for flanged, two-way, globe-type, straight pattern and center-to-face dimensions for flanged, two-way, globe-type, angle pattern control valves
    • Part 3-2: Dimensions – Face-to-face dimensions for rotary control valves except butterfly valves
    • Part 3-3: Dimensions – End-to-end dimensions for buttweld, two-way, globe-type, straight pattern control valves

Ballots are complete on several of the ISA revisions, and the documents will be published in the coming months.

Valve actuators: ISA96

At a June meeting in Raleigh, N.C., ISA96 addressed ongoing work and began drafting new documents under ISA96.07, Valve Actuator Accessories, and ISA96.08, Gas Over Oil Actuators.

In July, ISA96 published ANSI/ISA-96.03.02-2015, Guidelines for the Specification of Pneumatic Rack and Pinion Valve Actuators. Two additional standards will be published by the end of the year:

  • ISA-96.02.01, Guidelines for the Specification of Electric Valve Actuators (revised)
  • ISA-96.04.01, Guidelines for the Specification of Linear Hydraulic Valve Actuators

Device integration: ISA104

ISA104 is in the process of adopting the following IEC standards as American National Standards. The adoptions are expected to be completed in early 2016:

  • IEC 61804, Function blocks (FB) for process control and electronic device description language (EDDL)
    • Part 3: EDDL syntax and semantics
    • Part 4: EDD interoperability guideline
    • Part 5: EDDL Built-in library
  • IEC 62769, Field device integration (FDI)
    • Part 1: Overview
    • Part 2: FDI Client
    • Part 3: FDI Server
    • Part 4: FDI Packages
    • Part 5: FDI Information Model
    • Part 6: FDI Technology Mapping
    • Part 7: FDI Communication Devices
    • Part 101-1: Profiles – Foundation Fieldbus H1
    • Part 101-2: Profiles – Foundation Fieldbus HSE
    • Part 103-1: Profiles – Profibus
    • Part 103-4: Profiles – Profinet
    • Part 109-1: Profiles – HART and WirelessHART
