ISA Birmingham Section takes part in Job Fair at UAB
On 6 September, the University of Alabama-Birmingham held its annual School of Engineering Career Expo/Dean's Welcome Back Luncheon. This event is designed to give students an opportunity to connect and network with companies around the country and to learn about possible employment opportunities.
Representatives of more than 23 companies and approximately 150 students attended. Although primarily designed as a job fair, the event was an ideal opportunity to introduce and showcase ISA to engineering students.
The students were engaging and genuinely interested in what ISA could offer them in their careers in the areas of networking, opportunities, mentoring, and career development. The students were given ISA brochures and an invitation to the section's September Kickoff meeting, which was held 11 September at Logan's Roadhouse on Highway 280.
Among those attending from ISA were (L-R) Beth Clarkin (Assistant ISA Birmingham Section Webmaster), Yao Wang (Student liaison of the Birmingham section of ISA), and Patrick Joseph (Treasurer, ISA Birmingham Section).
A display prepared by the Birmingham Section leaders included materials explaining the goals and objectives of ISA, and sample instruments and devices (such as a working programmable controller that was used for demonstration purposes). The benefits and values of ISA participation were discussed, and the attendees were invited to take part in local ISA Birmingham events and activities.
Manthan 2018 is an annual orientation meeting, organized by ISA's Maharashtra Section, that enables ISA faculty advisors and student section leaders to create action plans and address challenges, enhance networking avenues among the student community and faculties, and to share information.
Among topics discussed were ISA's InTech magazine, benefits for student members, ways to enhance interaction with ISA student sections, seminars and industry-oriented lectures to be conducted for students, and skills development for honing the expertise of ISA members.
