Each February, the section recognizes national Engineers Week by organizing a STEM event and design competition for area high school students at Camden County College (CCC), a community college near Philadelphia.

With the help of the college's engineering and technology departments and its ISA student section, an event agenda is crafted that includes: a keynote presentation by a member of the South Jersey Section; an interactive session that enables attending students to meet and talk with practicing automation professionals; and a design competition that challenges students to build a working machine or device from common office supplies. Awards and plaques are presented to the top three winning students and their respective high schools.

"This annual event is really one of the most important things we do as a section all year," says Schmidt, who has been helping young people explore the joys of STEM education for nearly 30 years. "It gives interested students an opportunity to learn directly from automation professionals and engineers about real-world STEM career fields and how they might best pursue STEM career paths of their own."
