The Western Carolinas Section's June 2001 Meeting

The Western Carolinas Section's June 2001 meeting  held a surprise!  Clemson University was presented with a grant of $5,000.00.  Read the details on the grant below.

The Speaker for June's Program Meeting, Mr. Mike Scott, was well received.  Mike's presentation on Instrumented Safety Systems with emphasis on the practical application of the new regulations was well received.  Further discussion on SIS and SIL provided timely information on this important subject.  Mike's Bio and the presentation are included below for information.  

Dr Richard Rice of Clemson University's Chemical Engineering Department holding ISA Grant Check for $5,000.00

At the regular meeting on June 25th, ISA - The Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society, Western Carolinas Section, made a $5000 grant to the Chemical Engineering Department of Clemson University for upgrading of instrumentation in the Department's  Unit Operations Laboratory. Dr. Richard W. Rice, Associate Professor, accepted the grant on behalf of the University, and explained that this money will be  used to purchase  equipment for a new chemical kinetics experiment to be used by students in the Unit Operations lab. This is the second grant from ISA to Chemical Engineering at Clemson, and is done to promote the use of modern instrumentation by students and faculty. ISA is a world wide organization of people involved in a variety of industries and processes involving measurement and control applications.

Subject: Safety Instrumented Systems

Presentation Overview:

This presentation will focus on the impacts of current regulations, as well as, trends in industry, which have direct bearing on the design, maintenance, and operation of new and existing process facilities. It will provide insight on how to apply and comply with the performance based standard ANSI/ISA S84.01, - "Application of Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industries", which has formalized the process industry's approach to safety systems, and provides a method to achieve compliance, improving overall safety of their facilities. Examples of a typical process will be used to review and discuss each portion of the Safety Lifecycle.
