ISA/ANSI -18.2-2009: Management of Alarm
Systems in the Process Industries
In
June-2009, both ISA and ANSI formally approved
ANSI/ISA-18.2-2009, Management of Alarm Systems in the Process
Industries. The question now is, “What does this mean for
me?”
ISA-18.2
is the next stage in an ongoing process of increasing safety,
reliability, and visibility on the plant floor. The new
standard complements the already well-established EEMUA 191
guidelines for Alarm Systems. While EEMUA is focused on
benchmarks and metrics, ISA 18.2 establishes clear standards for
the overall Lifecycle of Alarm Management with the expectation
of a fundamental change in the ways businesses operate their
plants. It is expected that this new standard will impact
regulatory and reporting requirements in the near future, with
particular emphasis on the following industries: Oil & Gas,
Power, Nuclear, Commodity Chemicals, Petrochemical &
Refining, Mining & Minerals, Pharmaceuticals, Food &
Beverage, Pulp & Paper, and Discrete Manufacturing.
