Renewable
Sustainable Energy and the Green Energy Act
On
May 14, 2009 the Ontario's Legislature passed the Green Energy
Act, an act whose purpose is to attract new investment, create
50,000 new green economy jobs, and better protect the environment
by reducing our environmental footprint. This September one of the
key elements of the legislation, called the Feed-in- tariff
system, came into force.
The
FIT provides guaranteed prices for renewable energy projects, with
a related focus on helping companies, farmers, Co-ops and other
groups navigate the approvals process, creating Ontario jobs, and
developing a smart grid which, among its benefits, will support
this new energy supply.
In
this presentation, David Nixon from the Toronto Region
Conservation Authority, will provide an overview of how the Green
Energy Act can be utilized to build a small scale (up to 10KW)
grid-tied solar powered generating station that can yield 80 cents
per KW hour ... right in your back yard!
This
presentation will also include an overview of the Archetype
Sustainable Energy House located at the Kortright Centre in
Vaughn, as well as many other "renewable green
technologies" currently installed throughout the grounds.
Some of these features include:
-
Canada's
first roof-mounted grid-connected photovoltaic system
-
10
kilowatt grid connected wind turbine
-
An
energy efficient cottage powered entirely by solar and wind
energy
-
Biological
wetland waste water treatment system
-
A
state of the art SCADA energy monitoring system
-
Application
of the new ZigBee Wireless Standard and devices
