HART, PROFIBUS and Foundation Fieldbus have had a huge effect on instrumentation. All three protocols are in a state of constant development. It is an exciting time to be involved in this technology.   

During this presentation, a brief description will be given of each of the three buses. This will be followed by a description of some of the latest developments in this field:

  • Joint EDDL task force by HART, PROFIBUS and FF

  • Expansion into safety systems by PROFIBUS and FF

  • Profile expansion and TB standardization by PROFIBUS, FF and HART

  • Wireless technology by HART

James Powell, P.Eng Siemens Milltronics

 

As Product Manager, Communications, James provides technical expertise and leadership on industrial communications for Siemens Milltronics in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

 

He is a Professional Engineer and has published articles in ISA, Verfahrens Technik, PROFIBUS Newletter, PIC newsletter, and Control Engineering. He is an active member of ISA both as a presenter and reviewer. He has been an active member of PROFIBUS International and Fieldbus Foundations serving as a reviewer for PROFIBUS working group 7 and a member of the Foundation Fieldbus Transducer Block committee.

 

He holds a B.Sc. degree in Mathematics and Engineering from Queen's University (1987).
