  Failsafe Threshold Detection & Switching

SIS, SIL, SOS ... can somebody tell me what the #$%^& is going on!

Designing safety into a manufacturing process (Safety Instrumented System)

was unheard of years ago. It just made sense back then that if you had well

designed field devices, put them together by someone knowledgeable in process

design, you would end up with a relatively safe process. Until you find out that

the high limit temperature switch Malcolm sold you 10 years ago failed to work

when called upon.

Today new safety regulations ensure that there is accountability in design issues

right down to the device level; and manufacturers have met the challenge and

delivered the goods, meet the new kid on the block Failsafe Threshold Detection

& Switching.

Not only have these new devices met and surpassed regulatory standards such

as the ones TSSA requires for all hard-wired safety shutdown devices, they have

included more functionality that supplement the basic on/off conditions required

of a switch. Some of the design features include:

  • watchdog circuitry that continuously monitors the device

  • a digital display showing the process variable status

  • easy to use push button settings

  • fully adjustable setpoint and deadband settings

  • optional 4-20 mA outputs

  • health status display and communication

  • plugged notification

  • communicates and draws its power from the PLC or DCS

In his presentation Raj Bhatthal from United Electric Controls will give us an

overview of how these new devices operate and their use in field applications.

Raj has been with UE for over 12 years and has held various positions before

being assigned to the role of Regional Sales Manager 6 years ago and is

responsible for all of UE's business in Eastern Canada.
