SIL -  Safety Integrity Level

Current national and international standards and guidelines on the design of safety instrumented systems (SISs) are performance oriented, rather than prescriptive. The standards do not mandate technology, level of redundancy, or test intervals. For example, U.S. and international documents identify 3 safety integrity levels' (SILs) for the process industries, and site performance requirements for each level. In other words, different levels of risk require different levels of safety system performance.

An early and vital step in all of the standards is determining the required   SIL - safety integrity level  for an application. There are qualitative and quantitative methods for doing this, based on the risk associated with the hazard and the number of independent protection layers.

Simply put, the SIL is a safety-measurement standard defined by several bodies to quantify the chance of dangerous failures in electrical or electronic safety devices, that is, the probability of the device to fail in performing its safety function.

This presentation will focus on a general perspective and understanding these new tools, rather than the use of formulas and detailed references to code.

Speaker: Kevin Martyn, General Manager of Magnetrol Canada

Kevin has been in the instrumentation business for 28 years. He has written numerous articles for instrumentation trade magazines, and is a member of the board of the Canadian Process Control Association. He comes to us today to talk about the increasing use of  applications, and in particular it's broadened use outside of safety systems.
