Keynote Address

Session 1

8:00 am to 9:45 am

Donner Pass

Ted Marston, EPRI Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, will speak on the future of power systems and the role of automation systems in that vision

What changes are likely in the electric power industry?  How will concerns about climate change affect coal and gas-fired generation?  Will nuclear power make a renaissance?  Will renewables become significant contributors?  What is the role of conservation?  How will plant and grid operations change in light of stability and security concerns coupled with the aging workforce situation?  Our keynote speaker will provide his insights on these, including his perspective on the key role of automating systems as the power industry adapts for the future.

Ted Marston is senior vice president and chief technology officer at the Electric Power Research Institute. Prior to his most recent appointment, Ted Marston was EPRI's chief nuclear officer and vice president. Previously, he was a senior vice president of EQE International, Inc. and the president and CEO of PLG, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of EQE. Dr. Marston has more than 25 years of international experience in the assessment and management of risk for industrial facilities.

Marston holds bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan.

Session 4B - Nuclear Plant Automation Keynote

“Regulatory Issues and the Digital Automation Era of Nuclear Power Plants” – Jerry Mauck

Guidelines, standards, and NRC requirements dealing with the use of digital systems in nuclear plant applications have been available now for years. The process should have become much smoother as we have accumulated experience. And yet, to some, it seems the reverse is true. Can we combine the wisdom of experience with the energy of new ideas effectively?  Many of us know Jerry, retired Chief, Instrumentation and Controls Section, USNRC, and active participant in the ongoing development of digital systems.  Hear Jerry’s perspective on this and more, stimulating discussion on solutions throughout presentations on the excellent papers offered in the nuclear track
