A MESSAGE FROM YOUR LOCAL
STUDENT SECTION LIAISON

December 2003

Greetings members:

2003 was a great year for the NMCC Student Section. Our membership is strong with a total of 22 members including freshmen, seniors and recent graduates of the Industrial Control and Measurement Technology program at Northern Maine Community College. The section is very active and has achieved all the goals set forth on our 2002-2003 action plan. Included in these objectives were:

  • Hold monthly meetings during which we will transact any necessary business.

  • Maintain a checking account for the purpose of accounting and disbursement of funds.
  • Maintain an established budget to identify sources of funding as well as proposed expenses.
  • Continue hosting vender specific seminars as a fund raising activity and to gain knowledge of state of the art process control equipment.
  • Identify a courses of action to increase not only the enrollment of NMCC's IC&MT program, but also the membership of the student section. This will include making contacts with area high schools to speak with potential students and student section members.
  • Develop standardized presentation formats to be used on visits to area High Schools.
  • Secure funding to cover or offset the $85 CST exam fee for each student section member that will be sitting for the exam in 2003.
  • Maintain and continue to develop the Student Section website.
  • Explore the possibility of establishing a team of students to compete at the ISA International Student games in 2003.
  • Attend at least (1) Downeast Maine Section of ISA meeting annually (This meeting will not include those being held at NMCC).
  • Hold election of officers for the 2003-2004 academic year at the last official meeting in May 2003.

The highlight of the year for the student section was our success at ISA's 2003 International Student Games this fall in Houston, Texas. Through the hard work of team members Joe Conant, Doug Guerrette, Nick Poitras and Taylor Sutherland, District 1 was awarded bronze medals for the practical competition. This event could not have been possible without the generous support of the following organization and individuals:

  • Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Duncan

  • NMCC Student Senate
  • ISA District 1
  • New England Controls
  • Malcolm Pirnie, Inc
  • JM Huber Corporation
  • Supporters of NMCC Student Section fundraising seminars.

The student section would also like to thank Adam Brewer and Mike McNeil for honoring the team at a recognition luncheon , which was held on the NMCC campus November 6, 2003.
