Meeting Highlights - March 27, 2003

The ISA group met at Calpine Westbrook Energy Center in Portland for a tour of the facility. Mark Deshaies provided the group with a brief description of the combined cycle process and a tour of the facility. Below are some highlights of this facility:

  • 530 MW total output with three turbines: 2 use natural gas and 1 uses steam.

  • Natural gas is piped in from Sable Island (Westbrook uses a volume that is 20% of this pipeline's capacity).
  • The plant has an efficiency of 56 to 57%.
  • Exhaust gases from the gas turbine are at 1200 degrees F and are used for the Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG).

Thanks to Mark for taking the time to give us this tour.

After the tour, the group went to the Village Café Restaurant in Portland and had a good lunch. At this time, we held a quick ISA Meeting. We discussed the following topics:

  • Vendor Advertisements on the Downeast ISA Website - This is off to a good start. Although we have one company advertising, others will soon be listed. I encourage all Vendors to take advantage of this opportunity to advertise locally for a nominal annual fee. If you are interested in doing this, please contact Herb Short, our Treasurer - contact information can be found on the Downeast ISA website.

  • Treasurer's report - Herb presented the Treasurer's report. Current balance is $1,200.00. By our standards, this is low. Therefore, we are looking to improve this balance, and begin distributing scholarships within the next year via advertising on our website (see bullet above).
  • Future ISA meetings - Future ISA meetings have been planned, please check out our calendar on the website. Our next event is the Annual Golf Outing in September.

After lunch, the group adjourned to the Shipyard Brewery for another tour. This is an excellent facility located in downtown Portland. The tour was very informative and certainly gives one an appreciation for the passion this company has for making good beer.

Thanks to all who attended today's sessions and I look forward to seeing everyone in September!
