Membership

Any person interested in the objectives of the SOCIETY shall be eligible for election to membership in any grade for which eligibility requirements are fulfilled, in accordance with the conditions and procedures specified in the Bylaws.

Types of ISA Membership:
  • Member - Any person working in the instrumentation, systems, and automation profession who desires to support the Society's objectives.
  • Student Member - An individual who is enrolled as a full-time student in a program leading to an instrumentation, systems, or automation related degree or certificate.
  • Senior Member - An ISA Member or applicant who has graduated from a baccalaureate engineering or science curriculum, with at least six years of active work experience in the instrumentation, systems, and automation field (two of which shall have been in a position of responsible charge). If not a graduate, the Member/applicant must have 10 years of active work experience in the instrumentation, systems, and automation field (two of which shall have been in a position of responsible charge). Current ISA members apply for Senior Member status now. New members must Join ISA first and then apply for Senor Member status.
  • Life Member - A member, senior member, or fellow who has been a Member of ISA in good standing for a total of at least 20 years and whose combined age and years of ISA membership equals or exceeds the sum of 90. For more information, see the ISA Life Member website.
  • Fellow - A Senior Member elected by a majority vote of the Society's executive board who possesses outstanding and acknowledged engineering or scientific attainments; has been a Senior Member of ISA for at least five years; has been actively working in a field related to the Society's objectives for at least ten years; who has received recommendations by a minimum of five Fellows, Life Fellows, or Honorary Members; and was recommended for election by the Society Admissions Committee.
  • Honorary Member - Selected Senior Members are approved by the Honors & Awards Committee and subsequently by the ISA Executive Board for this prestigious Member grade. This grade is reserved for individuals whose outstanding contributions to the advancement of the arts and sciences of instrumentation, systems, and automation are worthy of special recognition. An Honorary Member shall without further payment of dues have all the rights and privileges enjoyed by all other classes of membership and shall be awarded an appropriate certificate, pin, and membership card.
  • Reduced Dues Member - A reduced dues option is available to prospective members who reside in certain countries. These countries are classified as low-income or lower-middle-income economies, as determined by the World Bank Organization, a nonprofit group dedicated to fighting poverty. Members in these countries pay $33 per year for full member benefits. You can join ISA as a reduced dues member using the regular membership enrollment form.
  • Reciprocal Member - ISA has reached agreements with several professional societies around the world to conduct joint programs. Some of those agreements include reciprocal membership, which allows members of one society to join the other at a discount. ISA has reciprocal membership agreements with GMA in Germany and The Institute for Measurement and Control (InstMC) in the United Kingdom. Contact ISA at info@isa.org or phone 919-549-8411 for information about reciprocal society membership.
