FTD Flyer for download

What is FDT?  FDT Technology is an open standard that provides a common interface for device integration between the host and the devices, independent of the communication protocol (FF, HART, Profibus, etc).  In many cases an end user might already have the technology implemented and it’s just a matter of accessing the DTMs to reap the benefits. FDT, also known as IEC 62453, standardizes the communication and configuration interface between all field devices and host systems, and provides a common visual environment for accessing the device's most sophisticated features. Any device can be configured, operated, and maintained through the standardized user interface — regardless of supplier, type or communication protocol.

Why is FDT needed?  Field instrumentation and control systems have come a long way since the 4-20 mA analog loops that have been the cornerstone of the automation industry for many decades. However, with all the new features and flexibility packed in today’s smart instrumentation, field engineers and technicians now face a new challenge — a multitude of communication protocols, platform compatibility, and how to incorporate all this new-found intelligence into their applications.

The FDT Advantage - This dinner presentation is vendor-neutral, offering an overview of the technology providing the basic understanding of how easy it is to have a common tool-set that accesses a manufacturer’s device intelligence on most communication platforms. Learn how it fits in new or existing plant infrastructures by providing process-improving benefits with impact on the bottom line. These benefits are achievable throughout the entire lifecycle of the solution with standardized integration of device diagnostics from today’s smart field devices for improved asset management.

Call for Papers -
55th Annual ISA POWID Symposium - Austin TX

The 55th Annual ISA POWID Symposium will be held 3–8 June 2012 at the Renaissance Austin Hotel in Austin, Texas, USA. The symposium, hosted by ISA’s Power Industry Division, provides information on the latest innovations in controls, instrumentation, cybersecurity, smart grid, regulatory issues and variable energy technologies, which impact the power generation delivery systems.

Abstracts may be submitted for the POWID Symposium now through 15 January 2012. Papers should focus on some aspect of the theme, “Power Generation–Automation Today and Tomorrow,” and should be relevant to the power industry. Paper topics include:

  Cybersecurity issues and solutions
  Nuclear plant innovations and enhancements
  Smart grid
  Renewable energy
Nuclear power, new and existing fleet
Fossil power, conventional steam, and combined cycle plants
  And others

Attention Registered Professional Engineers

All technical presentations and training seminars hosted by the ISA - Carolina Piedmont Section, qualify as Professional Development Hours (PDH's). PDH's are part of the Continuing Professional Competency (CPC) requirement of all Registered Professional Engineers. The ISA - Carolina Piedmont Section is an approved CPC Sponsor by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Land Surveyors (NCBELS).

UPDATE April 2011 - RECENT REPORTING CHANGES.

Due to recent reporting changes with the NCBELS, as an Approved Sponsor, we are required to document all attendee’s PE numbers and receive a completed evaluation form from each person requesting PDH credits. Sponsors are required to provide attendees an evaluation form as provided by the Board that is to be collected by the sponsor and retained for audit by the Board. Please indicate when you make your reservation if you require PDH credit for attending this meeting. Provide us with your PE number if we do not have it on file. After the meeting, you will receive an evaluation form by e-Mail. Please complete the form and return it in a timely manner to satisfy the audit requirements.
