Workplace Reading: Basic Skills

This course is one in a series which moves beyond just teaching students to read. It teaches students how to learn and apply their new skills directly to their work. Students learn to interpret what they are reading and to think critically. Deductive reasoning is stressed to help in preparing them for an in-depth study of technical skills. Students also learn how to use important reference materials. Topics Covered Include:

Reading in a work environment:

-Interpreting symbols in the dictionary
-Recognizing parts of a word: prefix, root, and suffix
-Reading illustrations
-Emphasis on understanding paragraphs, topics and topic sentences
-Locating the main idea in a sentence and paragraph
-Using visual cues to locate the main idea
