About

Changes in process dynamics often result in previously stable control loops becoming unstable. A method of increasing the robustness of a loop is the use of a plant model that provides feedback compensation. The paper evaluates an implementation of this technique in low-end digital controllers and compares the results to those of a typical PID control. The plant model used in parallel with the actual plant is estimated based on the given PID tuning constants. This results in easy implementation,
eliminating the need for direct identification of the process model. The effectiveness of one commercial
implementation is evaluated. The evaluation methods and comparisons are described and could be applied to other controllers.
