Personal Computer (PC) based Computer Numerical Control (CNC) architectures are finding growing acceptance in industrial machine tool control applications. The PC based control platform offers capabilities not found in traditional proprietary systems by taking advantage of open system architectures. This paper will define the functional parts of such a control system, explore the architectures used, discuss the integration effort, consider operation and maintenance issues, and summarize the advantages and pitfalls of open architecture PC based machine tool controls.
