As control systems become more complex and robust, the rare system failures that do occur are harder to find and fix. Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs), which make specific system design knowledge available to operators and maintenance technicians, offer a solution to this challenging problem. This paper explores the use of interactive electronic technical manual authoring and presentation technology as a knowledge engineering tool.

Classes of interactive electronic technical manuals, as well as their capabilities and limitations, are described. The results of an actual case study, including the evaluation criteria used to select a software solution for a sophisticated, multi-sensor command and control system application, are presented.
