The implementation of Safety Instrumented Systems in a batch process has a number of special problems not normally encountered in continuous processes. This paper explains these problems and provides solutions in the form of industry practices to overcome these problems. The main issues that are addressed are: segregation of control and safety, synchronization, implementation of variable trip points, operator interaction, and frequent state changes. Furthermore, batch processes by nature also have some advantages when considering safety. These are also highlighted.
