DCS (Distributed Control System) and PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) have traditionally been applied for different applications in process automation. However, with advances in computing and communications technology, each one is attempting to incorporate the strengths of the other in an effort to broaden the scope of process applications it can be used for. In reality, with traditional architectures, neither one can replace the other. The ideal approach to embrace new technology and incorporate thestrengths of one into the other is to develop a new architecture. Several vendors are already developingthese Open Control Systems. However, during this period of changing architectures, the task of selecting the most appropriate architecture has become more complex.
