Advanced sensors and new testing and maintenance technologies have become available over the last ten years that have the potential for use in nuclear power plants to replace outdated, obsolete, and troublesome instruments, provide for management of aging of critical plant equipment, optimize maintenance activities, reduce maintenance costs and personnel radiation exposure, and at the same time, improve plant safety and availability. Some of these new developments are reviewed in this paper. This paper summarizes some of the key results of a Research and Development (R&D) project performedby Analysis and Measurement Services Corporation (AMS), for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission(NRC) and documented in NUREG/CR-5501. (1)The project covered a wide spectrum of topics in the areas of process instrumentation, advanced sensors, predictive maintenance, automated testing, aging management, maintenance optimization, maintenance cost reduction, current instrumentation issues in nuclear power plants, etc.
