About

A survey of instrumentation and controls practices in the process industries was completed in November, 1998, under the sponsorship of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The information gathered in the survey was intended to benefit EPRI members as they make plant process control equipment decisions for a fossil utility industry in transition to an unregulated business environment.

The topics of the survey focused on the primary issues related to the replacement of analog panel-mounted process control instrumentation with digital control systems. Specifically:

  • Planning and Justification of Digital Control System Upgrades
  • Digital Control System Architecture
  • Digital Control System Specifications and Vendors
  • Implementation Procedures

The interviewees for the survey were 10 people with 20+ years experience in pulp and paper, chemical, petrochemical, or oil refining process control, including retrofitting panel-mounted instrumentation with digital control systems. Their experience perspectives, as a group, included implementation, cost/benefit analysis, project management, and equipment supply.
