Exploiting FOUNDATION Fieldbus with Existing DCSs - ISA EXPO 1997

Merely interfacing an existing control system to FOUNDATION Fieldbus (1) (FF) is one thing. But to really exploit Fieldbus's capabilities presents a real challenge. This is, in part, because the Fieldbus specification defines a process control user layer with all its implications and, in part, because there is now a standard for reporting field information to the control system that has not been available before. This paper summarizes the advantages of Fieldbus that are available to be exploited. It discusses three major points-of-view, and the configuring/process engineer's point of view. Then it discusses the user's needs from these three points of view, and how to satisfy them in order to truly gain the advantages of the Fieldbus benefits.
