An increased focus has been placed on field instruments used for safety applications because they are becoming the major source of failure. End users of instrumentation in safety critical applications are required to comply with new standards for safety instrumented systems that place increased burdens on then to justify their choice of equipment and quantitatively verify that performance goals have been achieved. The paper presents some of the new requirements that instrumentation users are required to fulfill. The paper also discusses methods for compliance with the new regulations with a focus on how vendors of field instrumentation can benefit by helping their customers to comply with the new regulations by providing either safety critical certification or the data required by the end user to verify the equipment’s effectiveness in his specific application.
