Today Ethernet is generally implemented in many automation devices (PLC, CNC, etc.) where it performs information transfers between host computers, PC based workstations, PLCs, and Operator Interfaces. Meanwhile, the technological evolution of Ethernet regarding determinism and performance has made it more and more evident that even the I/O level underneath the PLC is usable with Ethernet for control purposes. Does this mean a breakthrough for Ethernet to be used for field and control communication? What is the benefit? Does that approach go well with established field buses such as DeviceNet or ControlNet.
