Autotuning, which may be effectively used with fast processes in a distributed environment, is the focus of this paper. The traditional approach of centralizing autotuning in one device within a control system may introduce communication delay and jitter that is significant compared to the process dynamics. To avoid inaccuracies, which this may introduce, in the identification of a fast process, the autotuning application may be distributed throughout the control system. An example of how autotuning has been distributed in a scalable control system is examined. When structuring the autotuning application in this manner, advanced features may be added to autotuning that substantially enhance performance as compared to the previous implementations.
