About

The main focus of this paper is the integration of software agent technologies for functional
reserve - one functional task of plant and process supervision – in an information-oriented
context. The requirements for an information modeling of a production process are tackled to
integrate their complexity and their dynamic evolution. The information-oriented approach
presented in this paper focuses on process supervision and particularly functional reserve. For the implementation of the information models concerning this function, an agent-based
approach is adopted. The most important characteristics of software agents (autonomy,
intelligence, self acting, communication and mobility) are exploited and the different aspects
of realizing software agents in heterogeneous environments are taken into account - which are
typical for real production plants today. Furthermore, some requirements for such an
environment are formulated and it is shown how the usage of the ACPLT infrastructure models - developments from the Chair of Process Control Engineering of Aachen, Germany, in the field of communication and object management technology - supports the implementation of software agents.
