Overview

Length: 90 Minutes

Part 1 in the Industrial Ethernet Series.

Ethernet is fast becoming the new standard for industrial control networking worldwide. To use it effectively, controls specialists need to understand the various types of copper and fiber based Ethernet, and where each should or should not be used. Reasons for distance limitations, trends in cabling design and the emerging industrial standards are all important factors to consider. This presentation helps answer important questions faced by industrial Ethernet users. It provides an overview of the configuration rules for the most common Ethernet types and discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each. It also explains the differences between repeaters, bridges, switches and routers and how to correctly implement them in an industrial environment.

Key Benefits include:

  • Learn about the types of Ethernet and which are best for industry.
  • Understand how trends in commercial cabling standards are impacting the industrial world.
  • Know your options for Ethernet cable and connectors to avoid instant obsolescence and being locked in the past.
  • Learn where to use repeaters, bridges, switches and routers in industry.
  • Repeaters, bridges, switches and routers glue the network together - what are the differences and where should they be used?
  • Understand the core concepts of Ethernet technology.
  • Know the strengths and weaknesses of the Ethernet variations such as coax 10BASE5 and 10BASE2, twister-pair 10/100Base-T and fiber 10BASE-FL and 100BASE-Fl.

Proposed Audience

  • Process Control Designers and Systems Engineers who are decision makers in their companies' industrial automation projects.
  • Instrumentation Technologists and Engineers responsible for maintaining or upgrading PLC and DCS systems.
  • Managers or executives that need to stay on top of the advances in their or their competitors technology.
  • IS managers needing an understanding of how industrial Ethernet differs from the traditional business network.
  • Anyone involved in the installation, design or support of industrial data highways, fieldbuses or device networks.

About Archived Web Seminars

In today's work environment, there is limited time devoted to training. ISA now offers you the option of accessing a Web seminar at a time that is convenient for you.

ISA's archived Web seminars give you the same benefits as attending the live seminar broadcast, including hearing the instructor while simultaneously viewing the PowerPoint presentation. The only difference between the two is that the archived seminars do not allow for participation in a live Q & A session.

NOTE: You have three (3) weeks from the time you purchase the web seminar to complete.

Special Note! You can get this seminar and many more for free if you join ISA as a full member. Click here for details.

Equipment & System Requirements

Archived Web seminar users will be able to view interactive, rich media presentations over the Web using industry-standard browsers and streaming media players. Presentations are viewed using Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, as well as Windows Media Player. There is no proprietary software to download. In addition to streaming audio, and high-resolution slides, the archive Player uses thumbnails of the slides to provide quick, non-linear navigation presentations. You will need:

  • PC with available sound capability
  • Internet connection running at 28.8 bps or faster
  • Java-enabled browser (Netscape Navigator 4.04 or later or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 or later)
  • Computer monitor large enough for all participants to view or projection system to project the presentation for larger audiences.
