About

Overview: Basic Process Control Series - Process Variables

  • Course seat times vary for each individual topic.

  • Individuals receive a certificate of completion and 0.4 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) upon successful completion of final course examination.

This course explains the characteristics and measurement techniques for the process control variables to include pressure, level, temperature and flow.

Objectives:

  • Match the term pressure with its definition
  • Using an example, calculate the amount of fluid pressure exerted on a given object
  • Recognize the relationship between PSI, PSIG, PSIA, and gage pressure
  • Determine how hydrostatic head, density, and specific gravity are used to calculate pressure values
  • Match the terms level and volume with their definitions
  • Describe how a sight glass is used to measure level
  • Recognize how hydrostatic head is related to level measurement in open and closed systems
  • Identify the operational characteristics, construction and function of a bimetallic thermometer
  • Identify the operational characteristics, construction and function of a thermocouple
  • Identify the operational characteristics, construction and function of a resistance temperature detector and a thermistor detector
  • Recognize the advantages of a temperature loop system containing non-intrusive detection methods
  • Distinguish the characteristics and operation of the different types of flow meters
  • Recognize the relationship between flow rate and differential pressure

* NOTE: Once you access the course, you will have three weeks to complete the course and final exam.
