Length: 1 day
CEU Credits: .7

This course is a quick reference for technicians and operators to understanding the principles governing the use of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS). Students will learn basic definitions and concepts, the different types of standards, and the role of personnel in the Safety Life Cycle of such systems. It also serves as an introductory preparation for the more comprehensive ISA EC50 multi-day course covering design, analysis and justification of Safety Instrumented Systems and its related certificate program(s).

Individuals will realize the cost-effective system solution implemented by engineers and the role of technical staff on the safety team, the need for a life cycle in functional safety, and the importance of maintenance in the operational phase. Most importantly, students will gain an appreciation of the benefits of participating in programs to satisfy industry standards and legal requirements, not just a formality but rather as primary need … because, Safety Is Everyone’s Business !

You will be able to:

  • Define a safety instrumented system (SIS) and its function
  • Identify the principles behind ANSI/ISA 84.00.01
  • Evaluate the four basic characteristics of an SIS and their implications in the standards
  • Determine what risk is, and how it can be managed
  • Explain the following definitions: Layer of protection; PFD – PFS – RRF, Availability – Reliability; Architectures and Architectural Limitations; Safety Integrity Levels; and Demand modes
  • Discuss the difference between various industry-applicable standards

You will cover:

  • Introduction:  Scary Stories – Accident Evaluation - Justification
  • Definition of SIS and its Functions:  Dormant – Separation - De-energize to trip - Safe Failure Complications
  • Components:  Processors - Sensors - Final Elements
  • Layers of Protection:  Separation and Probability Factors - Statistical Tools
  • Hazard and Risk Management:  Hazard Identification - The Safety Life Cycle – Basic equations and their origin
  • Failure Rates & Modes:  Definition of PFD/PFS - Availability
  • Systems:  Role of redundancy - Output protection – Diagnostics - Safe Failure Fraction - Hardware Fault Tolerance
  • Safety Standards and Certifications
