It is necessary to know the safety integrity level (SIL) of the safety instrumented system (SIS) in order to specify a logic solver. A quantitative determination of the SIL is of particular value when the tolerable risk level is specified in terms of the probability of a hazardous event. This paper provides guidelines on how to perform a quantitative SIL evaluation using a combination of fault tree and event tree diagrams. One example is presented to show how these guidelines can be used effectively.
