This is a fundamentals book that introduces the essential “key” aspects of the major components used in most typical Industrial and Commercial Automation, Instrumentation and Control Systems. There are nine chapters or Modules that have been prepared in a manner to support both new personnel and introductory courses to this rapidly expanding field. The technology continually changes, but, most of the underlying application principles remain. The technology may change the medium used for a particular task, but the fundamental application principles required, to ensure the results are optimum, such as in “process measurement” and or “process control”, thankfully remain essentially the same. Some of the modules necessitated inclusion of more in depth detail, to fully illustrate the essential elements required for successful measurement and control system results. The book is designed with students, new practitioners, and managers in mind. Each chapter is complete with instructional objectives, a review exercise and review answers supplied in the appendix. A glossary module is provided to help communicate effectively with various practitioners in the field. It is supplied to assist the understanding of the numerous common Control, Automation and Instrumentation terms, expressions, acronyms and slang. Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical and Food Production Technology programs, as well as Electrical trades Apprenticeship programs have used this book for an introduction to the field of Automation, Instrumentation and Control. The fundamental material is also helpful for personnel in associated disciplines, as well as for managers and supervisors, that want an overview and basic comprehension of what this essential field of applied technology is all about. The following quote summarizes the approach taken in producing this book.“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough” Albert Einstein
