Why Smart People Do Dumb Things
September 17, 2012 Description:Human Factors Engineering: Why Smart People Do Dumb Things Date: Time: Location: Directions: Cost: Dinner: Reservations: Meeting Details Have you ever misplaced your keys? Turned the windshield wipers on instead of your turn signal? Shown up to work with two different colored socks? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, then you may find this discussion useful. Humans are not perfect, but when seemly simple mistakes occur, take place in a control room, or while operating complex equipment, these errors can have dire consequences. Join us as we consider just how the ‘human component’ can fail and what we can do from a design perspective to help users succeed in their tasks. We will discuss causes of human error as well as some common usability tips that lead to for good interface design. Paris Stringfellow received a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Clemson University in 2007, and has operated in the field of human factors for 8 years. Stringfellow currently works at AREVA as a human factors engineer in nuclear power plant main control room design. Prior to AREVA, Stringfellow worked with Fortune 500 companies to reduce human error. She also has significant experience using virtual reality to facilitate training in aviation maintenance.
