Dan Smith

Dan Smith currently manages the automation group at Capstone Technology in Seattle, focusing on Model Predictive Control (MPC) software and applications in the process industries. With 25 years experience in advanced control, Dan works extensively in paper, mining, and chemical industries using multivariable control technology to optimize process operations. Twelve years ago, after successfully negotiating with his wife, he quit a stable job to start development of a MPC software suite. He has spent the last 10 years with Capstone Technology continuing the software development and growing the business to include applications worldwide in paper, oil and gas, chemicals and air separation. He is active in providing MPC training to industrial customers as well as supporting research projects at universities. Dan holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Paper Science and Engineering from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Idaho. He is a member of both ISA and TAPPI.
