This year's invited keynote speakers will offer insight into advanced instrumentation technologies and how these interface with human processes across several industries and applications:

Paul Gruhn, Safety Expert, ICS Triplex

Gruhn is the global process safety consultant at ICS Triplex | Rockwell Automation. He has been very active with ISA at the section, division and department level for more than 20 years. Gruhn became an ISA Fellow in 2001, is a member of the ISA84 standard committee (on safety instrumented systems) and the ISA101 standard committee (on human machine interfaces). He is the developer and instructor of ISA courses on safety systems, the author of two ISA textbooks, chapters in other books, and more than two dozen published articles. Gruhn is the developer of the first commercial safety system software modeling program. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Texas, USA, and is an ISA84 expert. Read more

Dr. Richard Rivir, Chief Scientist, Wright Patterson AFB

Dr. Richard Rivir, a member of the scientific and professional cadre of senior executives, is Chief Scientist, Propulsion Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. He serves as the directorate's principal scientific and technical adviser and primary authority for the technical content and quality of the directorate's science and technology portfolio. The Propulsion Directorate's programs include air breathing propulsion; missile and rocket propulsion; electric and space propulsion; power and thermal management; and the development of alternative fuels and energy resource management for the Air Force. Dr. Richard Gran, CEO Mathematical Analytics Company

In 1962 Dr. Gran was part of the design team at Grumman that developed the Lunar Module Digital Autopilot. This effort, along with a similar effort on the Command Service Module, resulted in the first all digital control system ever flown on a manned vehicle. This experience led to a life-long pursuit of methods for improving the design of complex systems. At Grumman, Dr. Gran participated in R&D on a wide variety of unique systems:

  • the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor at Princeton, where he developed the control system for the plasma position and current
  • the X-29 Digital Fly-by-wire control system
  • research on the control of flexible systems

In 1995 Dr. Gran left Northrop Grumman in 1995, after a distinguished 33 year career and joined The MathWorks as an executive consultant. At The MathWorks he developed many unique examples that demonstrate the power of Simulink. In 2000 Dr. Gran left the MathWorks to devote full time to the consulitng efforts of Mathematical Analytics Company (MAC), but is still a MathWorks consultant. Read more

Industrial Wireless Systems (IC85C)
Instructor: Wayne Manges

Wireless systems and wireless technologies have advanced to the point where stable, robust and secure networks are ready for deployment in industrial settings. This course will cover the most relevant details associated with industrial wireless systems with an emphasis towards how the various technological choices coexist, interoperate and interact with each other. Numerous examples of real-world deployments are covered for facilities such as SCADA systems, petrochemical plants, electrical power generation, and transmission systems.

Ethernet and TCP/IP on the Plant Floor (FG21C)
Instructor: Peter Fuhr

Ethernet is fast becoming the new standard for industrial control networking worldwide. Using process control concepts, this seminar explains both Ethernet and TCP/IP as they apply to the plant floor. Included are topics such as the various types of copper and fiber based Ethernet, how to design Ethernet cabling systems, and principles of network security. You'll also look at the differences between repeaters, bridges, switches, and routers and how to correctly implement them. Real life examples and case histories will help you understand the truth about Ethernet and TCP/IP and how to use both effectively in your plant.

Overview of Measurement and Control Fundamentals (FG05C)
Instructor: Lou Verduzco

Overviews industrial measurement and control using a generally non-mathematical approach. You'll leave with a basis for communicating with other control system professionals.
