Hybrid processes, i.e. processes that have both batch and discrete or continuous elements, constitute the majority of manufacturing processes found in the food, consumer goods, specialty chemical and pharmaceutical industries today. It is important that manufacturers understand how the ISA S88 standard for batch control can be applied beyond the batch processing area to provide consistency in design and terminology throughout the manufacturing enterprise. A pharmaceutical case study is presented on how S88 concepts and models are applied to a manufacturing process that has, in the traditional sense, minimal batch processing.
