UOP Technology Award

The UOP Technology Award, established 1973, recognizes an outstanding achievement in the conception, design, or implementation of instrumentation and/or process control in an area of activity covered by the scope of the Society's Automation & Technology Department. The award was endowed by UOP, Des Plaines, Illinois, a Platinum Patron of ISA's Honors & Awards Program.

Vince R. Dooley

Alcoa World Alumina, Attadale, Australia

Citation:

For the development of specialized on-line instrumentation for the improvement in process control of the Bayer process for alumina refining.

About Vince R. Dooley

Vince R. Dooley is a Senior Research Principal Engineer at Alcoa World Alumina. During the course of a significant career at Alcoa, Dooley has invented and implemented a range of sophisticated on-line analytical instruments for the company’s global alumina refining system. Dooley is credited with at least 3 inventions that have been included in the Alcoa-Honeywell-Quasar Advanced Process Control system. These key enablers for the overall control system won the Engineers Australia National Project Excellence Award in Automation, Control and Instrumentation in 2007.

Dooley is the author of "Mud level gauges - A Comparison of Techniques", published for the Fourth international alumina quality workshop, 1996. He holds a patent for Thickener Mud Gauge and has several patent applications pending for the on-line Bayer process liquor analyzer. Dooley holds a Bachelor of Technology (Electrical) from Queensland University of Technology and a New Zealand Certificate of Engineering (Mechanical).

Award and Presentation:

The UOP Technology Award may be presented annually and carries a $1,000 honorarium and plaque. The presentation is made at the annual honors and awards program.

Qualifications:

The award is open to any person. Each candidate's contribution should be judged on the basis of the following suggested criteria: technological originality; usefulness; and the successful implementation of principles involved.

Nomination:

Nomination of an individual for the UOP Technology Award is accepted from any individual. Nominations are made in writing on the appropriate form.
