ISA 4th Annual Water & Wastewater and Automatic Controls (WWAC) Symposium
The WWAC Symposium will take place 4-6 August 2009 in Orlando, FL.
The event is designed to help professionals in the water and wastewater industry understand how automatic control applications effect processing and distribution of water treatment and provide an outstanding opportunity to gain valuable technical information and training.
Attendees will review the latest controls equipment as well as instrumentation to fit today's industry needs. A technology focused one–day training seminar and two days of technical sessions will provide the latest in applications, networking, communications, and instrumentation technology associated with this water treatment industry.

ISA 4th Annual Marketing and Sales Summit
The ISA 4th Annual Marketing and Sales Summit will take place 9-11 September 2009 in Boston, MA. The symposium will help marketing and sales executives in automation markets meet the strategic and tactical challenges of the 21st century. This unique event is designed exclusively for senior sales and marketing professionals in the automation markets.
This year’s summit offers paper presentations, best practices, and case studies, and focuses on the current market situation and how to adapt to new conditions, new markets; changing trends; and more.
The 54th Analysis Division Symposium, held 19-23 April 2008 in Houston, TX attracted over 100 professionals. The symposium focused on analytical solutions for energy optimization and environmental compliance, a theme that offered insights into timely and relevant concerns facing today’s companies.

Two volunteer-led ISA Analysis Division courses were held on 19 April, including a new Advanced Chemometrics course and an Introduction to Process Analyzers. An ISA course titled Industrial Wireless Systems wrapped up the symposium activities on Thursday, 23 April.
Attendees enjoyed nightly vendor-sponsored hospitality suites that offered invaluable networking opportunities between suppliers and end-users!
The 55th Annual ISA Analysis Division Symposium will take place in New Orleans, LA, at the Astor Crown Plaza right in the middle of the French Quarter.

The 2009 Industrial Automation Safety and Security Symposium, sponsored by the ISA Safety Division, successfully wrapped up its event in Houston, TX, at the Marriott Houston Hobby Airport on 23 April 2009.

The 55th International Instrumentation Symposium (IIS) was held in League City, TX, from 1-5 June 2009. The symposium was attended by 75 people from around the globe including Canada, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Great Britain, Columbia, and 19 states in America.
Keynote speakers from ISA Society leadership included Leo Staples and Past President Kim Miller Dunn. Other Keynote speakers included Dr. Louis Iselin, who presented his keynote titled "Your New Method may be Quite Valuable, but is it Patentable," Dr. James Hall, whose keynote was titled "Instrumentation Challenges for Deepwater Subsea Oil & Gas Production," and Dr. Angela Summers who spoke at the awards banquet on safety.
A record number of undergraduate and graduate papers were presented this year! Students from universities in the southern United States presented at sessions on a broad array of topics that were well attended and appreciated by all conference attendees.

The ISA Power Industry Division (POWID) held its annual symposium in early May at the Rosemount Convention Center near Chicago, IL. The symposium focused on instrumentation and control systems for power generation. For the first time in history, the POWID Symposium co-located with another industry event, ELECTRIC POWER (EP)..
Program Chair, Jim Batug put together over 50 papers and presentations. The two-and-a-half day symposium was organized into 14 technical sessions with topics including: Plant Performance; I&C Applications; Critical Infrastructure Protection; On-line Plant Optimization Controls; Nuclear Industry Topics; CFB Boiler Controls, Regulatory, Safety and Training; Control System Advances, New and Retrofit; and Operations and Maintenance Optimization.
Jason Makansi, Keynote Speaker, provided an excellent perspective on the current state of the electric power industry and the public’s perception of it.

Dale Evely, Principal Engineer in Instrumentation and Controls at Southern Company Generation received the Achievement Award and was honored for his work in the industry by being elevated to the grade of ISA Fellow.
Dale has been an ISA Member since 1979. He’s a Member of the POWID Executive Committee, and the Division’s newsletter editor. Some of his other associations are a member of ASTM and its D22 committee on Air Quality and three NFPA 85 Boiler and Combustion System Hazards Code Technical Committees.
Stephen (Skip) Wells, New Generation Instruments and Controls Lead and Staff Designer at Southern Company Generation was awarded the Service Award this year. His expertise includes the system development for combined cycle and cogeneration generating facilities for Southern Company. Skip is a Life Senior ISA Member and has served in a variety of positions within ISA including the Birmingham Section Level, District 3 Level, and most recently the Image & Membership Department (IMD) as Vice President 2006-2007. He has also served on the ISA Executive Board.
He is active in the Birmingham Section and maintains a presence within the Image & Membership Department (IMD). Skip’s ISA activities are in the POWID Division and the Construction and Design Divisions. Present positions within ISA include; Director of the Administrative Committee of the Image & Membership Department (IMD); a Member of the Administrative Committee of the Society’s Honors & Awards Committee; Birmingham Section Section-Division Liaison, Chair of the Birmingham Section Standards & Practice Committee, and Birmingham Section Historian.
Bob Hubby and Roger Leimbach received the Facility Award for the Rutenberg Station.
Best Paper was authored by Donald Labbe, Darryl Roberts and Jeff Brown entitled “Equipment Upgrades and Phased Optimization Enhance Unit Performance”.
2nd Best Paper was authored by Jody Damron and Laura Somak entitled “Tracking and Reporting of Instrument and Control Data in a Timely Manner”.
3rd Best Paper was authored by Kenji Mashio entitled “Human Factor Engineering & HIS Design in the US-APWR”.
